What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based, structured treatment designed
to help individuals manage intense emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and
improve relationships. It focuses on teaching practical skills in four key areas—
mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—to
build emotional resilience.
How Can It Help?
DBT can help individuals struggling with emotion regulation, trauma, anxiety,
depression, or borderline personality disorder learn and apply specific skills. These skills
have been found to help individuals make progress in their daily functioning by
managing chronic stress more effectively.
What are the Four Skills focused on?
Mindfulness: Learning to be present in the moment and control attention.
Distress Tolerance: Managing crises without reacting impulsively or self-destructively.
Emotion Regulation: Understanding, managing, and reducing intense, negative
emotions.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Building healthy relationships, communicating needs, and
setting boundaries.
